Dude, Where’s My Niche? Pick your passion and own your space.

Finding your niche – the space you can absolutely own and monetize endlessly – is where a lot of people get tripped up. It’s less often about finding something you love, and more about deciding which passion is worth pursuing. Let’s get a discussion going on this and see if we can get past that and start executing.

Here’s a quick rundown of the video…

  • Solid advice from Gary Vaynerchuk (@garyvee)
  • People want solutions, not information
  • Do you have passion? Expertise? Both?
  • Why will people buy from you? (Insight from Seth Godin)
  • Challenge: Find a ridiculous niche (and a few examples)

If you want to check out the Boston event with Gary, click this link to watch it: NomX3 with Garyvee: Wining, Dining and Signing. The question Seth asked (mentioned in my vid) is at 52:55. Also a question I asked about risk & failure just before it (51:20).

A killer place to "find niches" supported by magazines is Zinio (www.zinio.com). It also allows non-US folks to pickup US publications.

I just came over from your video on Tim's site. I'm a fan of Nissan Sedans. A new magazine came out in the past year, it's called "Nissan Sport Magazine". When it was first announced, I totally thought it would bomb. Not only did it come out during Credit Crunch, but Nissan has not been a #1 seller in USA for any category of cars. Were there enough owners out there that cared or had interest in such a small specific niche? Yup, they sold out, and subscriptions are growing fast. Plus, much of it is user content. People write about their own cars, submit it in, and the editors pick and write about the interesting ones. The first mag had a few ads on every 5th page. The most recent one had an ad on every 3rd.

Is there a niche publication for Muselife founders who are passionate about wearing shirts 2 sizes to small for them?
  • Not yet, we're busy running an Adwords campaign to split-test titles for it. And for the record, mine are always much smaller than Hosko's.

    Couldn't resist:

    Cowboys Who Are Christian
    Cephalopods
    Convenience Store News
    American Cemetery
Sheep Magazine - The Voice of the Independent Flockmaster
    Cell Door (About prison life)
Flying Funeral Directors (perhaps "flying" is an industry term within this context?)
Concrete Quarterly (probably a great publication to place any type of late night 800 number ads)
  • Nice post... probably the best 10 min video I've watched this month. Can't stress the information vs. solution argument enough. Leave the information stuff to wiki sites and be the provider of answers to people's questions.

  • Absolutely right Mike. The problem is never not enough information - it's having far too much. It becomes paralyzing.

Just a few funny ones I have found
-Girls and Corpses (for those guys who just have to see women and dead bodies)
-Modern Drunkard (keep in the know with other people who drink way to much)
-A Bear's Life (Men who look like bears, and need to talk about their experiences)
-Bacon Busters (A magazine for the pig hunter in all of us!)

Girls and Corpses, I didn't believe it until I Googled it and saw the site. I guess there is something for everyone. I wonder what products I could sell in that magazine!
  • Brad nice finds man. Seriously obscure titles. I actually used to have a few issues of Modern Drunkard, it was absolutely classic.
